A bright celestial body illuminated the sky of the Libyan capital, Tripoli, and several cities in western Libya on Sunday night, leaving a striking scene captured in circulating videos, coinciding with a loud sound that raised questions among residents about the possibility of a meteorite falling on Libyan territory.
The luminous body was observed in several areas, including Tripoli, Misrata, and Zuwara, while residents reported hearing a loud noise following its appearance, and others spoke of feeling a slight tremor.
“Remote Sensing” Clarifies the Nature of the Body
The Libyan Center for Remote Sensing and Space Science explained that the burning body seen in the sky of the capital is a meteor, clarifying that the phenomenon occurs when a small celestial object, such as a meteorite or a part of a comet, enters the Earth’s atmosphere at a very high speed.
The center noted that the intense friction with the air causes the object to heat up and burn, making it appear very bright and leaving behind a fiery tail or a glowing trail, which are the features observed in the circulating videos.
Did a Meteorite Fall to Earth?
Despite the widespread description of the incident on social media as “a meteorite falling in Libya,” the relevant authorities have not yet announced the discovery of meteorite fragments or identified an impact site on the Earth’s surface.
The Libyan center clarified that some similar sightings could also result from space debris entering the atmosphere, such as parts of satellites or old rockets, burning up during their return to Earth.
Thus, the confirmed scientific description so far is that what was observed over Libya was a luminous meteor in the atmosphere, not a meteorite that has been confirmed to have reached the Earth’s surface.
