قبل أن تفتح المحاكم دفاترها السوداء، وقبل أن تتناقل وكالات الأنباء أسرار الجزيرة سيئة الصيت، كان هناك من قرأ الحكاية من سطرها الأول. ففي أواخر الثمانينيات، أطلق الملياردير البريطاني الراحل جيمس غولدسميث تحذيراً صريحاً لمقربيه بشأن شخصية غامضة بدأت تحوم حول أوساط النخبة والمال: إنه جيفري إبستين، الذي وصفه صراحة بأنه منحرف يستهدف الأطفال، محذراً عائلته ومهندسها المعماري روبرت كوتورييه من الاقتراب منه تماماً.
التفاصيل التي كشفها تحقيق صحيفة «الغارديان» تسلط الضوء على استماتة إبستين في اختراق دوائر عائلة غولدسميث بحثاً عن غطاء ومفتاح للعبور إلى عالم الأثرياء والنفوذ. غير أن الأبناء، ومعهم الابنة جميما، أكدوا أن والدهم كان يحتقر الرجل ولم تربطه به أي صلة. هذا التجاهل المبكر تُرجم لاحقاً عندما رفض كوتورييه استكمال تصميم جزيرة إبستين الخاصة بعد أن تذكر كلمات غولدسميث التحذيرية التي سكنت ذاكرته منذ عام 1987.
هذه الوثائق الجديدة تكشف أيضاً عن خيوط متشابكة تعود إلى منتصف الثمانينيات في منتجع «هيلتون هيد» بولاية ساوث كارولاينا، حيث تدعي إحدى الضحايا تعرضها للاعتداء ونقلها عبر شبكة إبستين المتسعة، في وقت كانت فيه الجزيرة ممراً آمناً لأصحاب الطائرات الخاصة بعيداً عن أعين الرقابة. ورغم نفي الجهات الرسمية وتأكيد شقيق إبستين عدم علمه بتلك التحركات، تظل الفجوات الزمنية في سجلات تلك الحقبة شاهدة على قدرة الرجل الفائقة على التحرك طويل الأمد داخل أروقة النخبة.
وبينما تتكشف الأوراق تباعاً عبر ملايين الوثائق التي تفرج عنها وزارة العدل الأمريكية، يبرز تساؤل مؤلم حول الكيفية التي استطاع بها إبستين مراوغة العدالة لعقود، بينما كان بعض المقربين منه قد التقطوا إشارات الخطر قبل عشرات السنين من سقوط تلك الإمبراطورية المظلمة.
Before the courts opened their black books, and before news agencies circulated the secrets of the infamous island, there were those who read the story from its first line. In the late 1980s, the late British billionaire James Goldsmith issued a clear warning to his close associates about a mysterious figure who began to hover around elite and wealthy circles: it was Jeffrey Epstein, whom he explicitly described as a pervert targeting children, warning his family and architect Robert Couturier to stay completely away from him.
The details revealed by the investigation of the Guardian shed light on Epstein’s desperate attempts to infiltrate the Goldsmith family circles in search of cover and a key to access the world of the rich and powerful. However, the children, along with daughter Jemima, confirmed that their father despised the man and had no connection to him. This early disregard was later translated when Couturier refused to continue designing Epstein’s private island after recalling Goldsmith’s warning words that had lingered in his memory since 1987.
These new documents also reveal intertwined threads dating back to the mid-1980s at the Hilton Head resort in South Carolina, where one of the victims claims she was assaulted and transported through Epstein’s expansive network, at a time when the island was a safe passage for private jet owners away from the watchful eyes. Despite official denials and Epstein’s brother confirming his ignorance of those movements, the time gaps in the records of that era stand witness to the man’s extraordinary ability to operate long-term within the corridors of the elite.
As the papers unfold gradually through the millions of documents released by the U.S. Department of Justice, a painful question arises about how Epstein managed to evade justice for decades, while some of those close to him had picked up warning signs decades before the fall of that dark empire.
