The British media group “Daily Telegraph” intends to lay off around 100 employees as part of a plan to restructure the organization and transform it into a global media company that relies more on artificial intelligence and digital technologies, following months after the German group “Axel Springer” acquired it.
The British newspaper “The Guardian” reported that the new management informed employees yesterday (Friday) about the commencement of wide-ranging organizational changes, including job cuts and the rearrangement of editorial departments, as part of a strategy aimed at developing the organization’s business and diversifying its revenue sources.
Job Cuts and Restructuring
According to the report, several employees received notices of termination, while the organization began formal consultation procedures regarding job reductions, without announcing a final tally of the number of affected workers, amid expectations that the number could reach around 100 employees.
The group’s CEO, Caroline Holschof Paul, explained in an internal message to employees that the organization aims to transition from a traditional British newspaper to a global media and specialized information company, supported by artificial intelligence, data, and modern technology.
She added that the anticipated transformation requires reorganizing work, accelerating decision-making, simplifying the administrative structure, and enhancing operational efficiency, emphasizing that the organization will expand the use of artificial intelligence while maintaining the elements that technology cannot replace, foremost among them editorial judgment, authenticity, and trust.
Expansion in Digital Products and International Markets
The plan includes developing new revenue sources through video production and audio content, organizing events, and providing services to companies, in addition to commercial licenses and digital products, along with expanding into international markets, particularly in the fields of foreign affairs, defense, and business.
German Acquisition Worth £575 Million
These steps come after the German group “Axel Springer” acquired “Daily Telegraph” last June for £575 million, ending nearly three years of uncertainty regarding the ownership of the British newspaper.
The German group, which also owns media institutions including “Politico,” “Business Insider,” and the newspapers “Bild” and “Die Welt,” had pledged upon completing the deal to invest in the development of “Daily Telegraph” and expand its international presence.
Concerns About the Future of Journalism Jobs
The plan for job cuts has raised questions within the organization about the impact of the restructuring on journalistic work, especially as management moves towards increasing reliance on modern technologies while reducing the number of employees.
