تحولت علاقة ثقة جمعت مسنّة تبلغ من العمر 99 عاماً بممرضة كانت تعدّها بمنزلة فرد من العائلة إلى واحدة من أكثر قضايا الاستغلال إثارة للصدمة في بريطانيا، بعدما ثبت استيلاء الممرضة على أموال وممتلكات الضحية بقيمة تقارب 770 ألف جنيه إسترليني.
وقررت هيئة التمريض البريطانية شطب اسم ريبيكا بورود، التي شغلت سابقاً منصب نائبة مدير إحدى دور الرعاية، بعد ثبوت تورطها في استغلال إحدى المقيمات المسنات والاستفادة من اعتمادها الكامل عليها عقب تدهور حالتها الصحية؛ إثر تعرضها لسقوط أثر في قدرتها على إدارة شؤونها بنفسها.
وكشفت التحقيقات أن المسنة كانت تنادي الممرضة باسم (نانا) وتعاملها بثقة كبيرة، وهو ما استغلته الأخيرة للسيطرة على قراراتها المالية والتصرف في أصولها ومدخراتها بطرق غير مشروعة.
وبحسب تفاصيل القضية، استولت الممرضة السابقة على منزل الضحية الذي تُقدّر قيمته بنحو 400 ألف جنيه إسترليني، كما تمكنت من سحب مبالغ ضخمة من حساباتها المصرفية، لتصل قيمة الأموال والأصول التي فقدتها المسنة إلى نحو 770 ألف جنيه إسترليني؛ أي ما يزيد على مليون دولار أمريكي.
وأظهرت التحقيقات أن الأموال المنهوبة استُخدمت في تمويل نفقات ومشتريات شخصية؛ من بينها أعمال تطوير وتوسعة لمنزل الممرضة، وشراء سيارة وعربة تخييم، قالت إنها مخصصة لرحلات ترفيهية للمسنة، إلى جانب شبهات تتعلق بتمويل إجراءات تجميلية.
وفي المقابل، تراجعت الموارد المالية للضحية بصورة حادة، حتى لم يتبقَّ في حساباتها سوى مبالغ محدودة، ما استدعى تدخل المجلس المحلي لتغطية تكاليف رعايتها الأساسية، لتنتهي القضية بإجراءات مهنية صارمة بحق الممرضة وشطبها من سجل مزاولة المهنة بعد إدانتها باستغلال واحدة من أكثر الفئات هشاشة وضعفاً في المجتمع.
A trusting relationship that developed between a 99-year-old woman and a nurse she considered a family member turned into one of the most shocking exploitation cases in Britain, after it was proven that the nurse had embezzled funds and assets from the victim worth nearly £770,000.
The British Nursing Authority decided to strike Rebecca Borod, who previously held the position of deputy manager at a care home, from the register after it was confirmed that she was involved in exploiting one of the elderly residents and benefiting from her complete reliance on her following a deterioration in her health due to a fall that affected her ability to manage her affairs independently.
Investigations revealed that the elderly woman referred to the nurse as “Nana” and treated her with great trust, which the latter exploited to control her financial decisions and manage her assets and savings in illegal ways.
According to the details of the case, the former nurse seized the victim’s home, valued at approximately £400,000, and was able to withdraw large sums from her bank accounts, leading to the total value of money and assets lost by the elderly woman reaching around £770,000; more than one million US dollars.
Investigations showed that the stolen funds were used to finance personal expenses and purchases, including development and expansion work on the nurse’s home, as well as the purchase of a car and a camping trailer, which she claimed were intended for recreational trips for the elderly woman, along with suspicions related to funding cosmetic procedures.
In contrast, the victim’s financial resources sharply declined, leaving only limited amounts in her accounts, which necessitated intervention from the local council to cover her basic care costs, culminating in strict professional actions against the nurse and her removal from the professional register after being convicted of exploiting one of the most vulnerable and fragile groups in society.
