The Syrian military court in Aleppo sentenced two defendants to death and a third to 12 years in prison today (Thursday) for their involvement in committing violations during the events on the Syrian coast, while authorities announced the arrest of Ali Kayali, known as “Miraj Oral,” the main suspect responsible for the massacre in Banyas in 2013.
During the session held by the court today, the defendants Waddah Ismail and Maher Ali faced charges of assault aimed at inciting civil war and sectarian fighting, as well as leading armed gangs with the intent to attack public forces, while Maher Othman was accused of intervening in the aforementioned crimes.
The court issued a death sentence for Waddah Ismail and Maher Ali, and a 12-year prison sentence for Maher Othman.
On September 17, the court had previously issued rulings against four defendants in the coastal violations cases, sentencing one to death, another to life imprisonment, and a third to 20 years in prison, while acquitting the fourth defendant.
The court began its first public trial sessions for those accused of committing violations during the coastal events on November 18, 2025, at the courthouse in Aleppo, with the attendance of the victims’ families.
The National Commission for Investigation and Fact-Finding on the Coastal Events issued a report on July 22, 2025, stating that remnants of the former Syrian regime launched extensive attacks targeting military and security headquarters on March 6, 2025, resulting in the deaths of 238 personnel.

In a related development, Syrian authorities announced the arrest of Ali Kayali, known as “Miraj Oral,” the main suspect responsible for the Banyas massacre in 2013, according to the Syrian news agency “SANA” citing the General Intelligence Directorate.
The agency stated that the arrest of Kayali occurred while he was attempting to flee across the border, without disclosing further details regarding the circumstances of the operation.
Kayali was born in 1956 in the city of Antakya in Turkey’s Hatay province, near the Syrian border, and Turkish authorities accuse him of being behind several bombings in the country and of establishing extremist organizations.
Kayali entered Syria in May 1980 and established ties with Jamil Assad, who granted him Syrian citizenship a year after his arrival, allowing him to settle in the city of Latakia.
Kayali is accused of being responsible for the deaths of hundreds of civilians in the village of Bayda in the city of Banyas, in Tartus province, during the events of 2013, when around 250 civilians, including women and children, were killed by means including burning and slaughtering, according to information in reports related to the massacre, later earning him the title “Butcher of Banyas.”
