Drones leave a thunderous roar in the sky over the arid La Guajira Peninsula, followed by an explosion obscured by desert dust. Soon after, the Caribbean Sea spits out its sorrowful cargo: burned fuel canisters, torn boat parts, and bodies with no legacy except names circulated in the margins of social media. For nearly a year, U.S. forces have carried out around 20 deadly strikes targeting fast smuggling boats as part of what is known as “Operation Southern Lance,” in a harsh attempt to choke off the maritime cocaine trade.

But far from the official statements issued by Washington claiming to cripple the traffickers, the scene on the ground in the far north of South America is completely detached from the language of military numbers. Local residents, drug trafficking networks, and National Liberation Army gangs roaming in four-wheel-drive vehicles armed to the teeth are fully aware that the military machine only kills cheap human fuel.

The operation, which left more than 235 dead in about 70 maritime strikes, has failed to dry up the white rivers flowing from the Catatumbo forests to the forgotten shores of Colombia. When a boat driver or “lanchero” is killed, network leaders find a replacement within hours, exploiting extreme poverty and a near-total absence of the state, where remote police stations are limited to officers without vehicles amid animal pens.

While grieving mothers in Riohacha cling to a futile search for the bodies of their missing sons among the Caribbean waves and Dominican islands, death boats loaded with thousands of kilograms continue to set sail under the cover of darkness. The airstrikes only slightly raise the cost of the journey, while the cocaine machine keeps running non-stop, and the Colombian desert remains an open grave for the dreams of a generation that sees smuggling as the only lifeline amid the ruins of reality.
