In a scene that reopens a file that has hung over the waters of the River Thames for 80 years, the British government has begun a highly sensitive engineering operation to deal with a sunken American warship carrying around 1,500 tons of explosives inside its rusty hull, amid fears of a collapse that could trigger an unprecedented explosion in the area.

The SS Richard Montgomery is located in shallow waters near one of England’s most important shipping lanes, where it has rested since 1944 after sinking during World War II, while thousands of shells and heavy bombs remain trapped inside its corroded hull, in a situation described by experts as a “time bomb” waiting for a spark.

As the deterioration of the structure accelerates and the risk of collapse increases for the three giant masts still protruding above the water’s surface, British authorities have approved an urgent project to dismantle the most dangerous parts, in an attempt to prevent the masts from falling onto the ship’s hull; a scenario that could lead to a massive explosion affecting coastal communities and surrounding infrastructure.

The government is relying on a specialized maritime salvage company to carry out the operation using precise tools, including saws designed to prevent vibration during cutting, to minimize any movement that could affect the old munitions inside the ship. Experts confirm that the explosives, despite the passage of many decades, remain capable of detonating when exposed to strong water currents or sudden shocks.

Estimates suggest that an explosion of the full cargo could cause a massive shockwave and a tsunami-like wave, a possibility that the government classifies as “extremely low,” but it refuses to leave it without precautionary measures, especially since removing all the explosives from inside the ship would require a large-scale evacuation of residents and is considered more dangerous than the current situation.

Therefore, the operation focuses on stabilizing the structure, removing the masts, and monitoring the ship around the clock, while keeping the area closed to navigation, in an attempt to protect the River Thames from a threat that has persisted for eighty years.
