The Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov accused Ukraine and its president Volodymyr Zelensky today (Thursday) of obstructing peace efforts made by the United States.

Peskov told reporters: “The Ukrainian Kyiv regime continues to launch strikes on these energy facilities, which undoubtedly seriously contradicts the peace efforts being made by the United States and the American negotiators, who are already actively seeking to initiate a path that advances the peace process,” adding: “These diligent efforts are currently being met with the refusal of the Kyiv regime and Zelensky personally to move towards peace.”

Russian authorities reported that a Ukrainian attack using drones and missiles targeted an oil refinery in the Ryazan region of Russia, southeast of Moscow, today, resulting in a fire. The Russian Ministry of Defense stated in a statement that “the Kyiv regime attempted to launch a large-scale attack on the Ryazan oil refinery, and debris from the drones fell at the refinery site, causing a fire.”

The strikes came hours after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced the end of a short ceasefire to protect energy infrastructure, which Moscow had rejected, amid rising tensions with Washington. Zelensky stated in an interview with the Financial Times published today that he ended a temporary halt in attacks on oil refineries, a halt he had imposed following statements from U.S. President Donald Trump regarding a “ceasefire in the energy sector.” Zelensky confirmed that he would not agree to stop these strikes unless the United States provided Ukraine with Patriot interceptor missiles, given the shortage Kyiv is facing in air defense means to counter Russian attacks.
