It is impossible to talk about lasting peace in Yemen while the crimes committed by the Houthi militia against civilians remain unaccounted for, and the violations that have affected state institutions, regional security, and neighboring countries are outside the realm of accountability.
Political settlements, no matter how important they may be, should not become a shield for impunity, nor should they grant perpetrators of violations the opportunity to reproduce violence and impose facts on the ground by force.
Holding the Houthi militia accountable for its terrorist crimes is not a call for revenge, but a necessity to protect Yemeni society and the region, to provide justice for the victims, and to establish the principle that the lives, security, and rights of civilians are not negotiable. There is no doubt that targeting civilian objects, recruiting children, planting mines, arbitrary detention, suppressing freedoms, and attacks that threaten the security of neighboring countries and international navigation are all crimes that warrant independent and serious investigations, and the determination of responsibilities based on evidence and law.
Accountability begins with documenting violations and preserving evidence, supporting victims and witnesses, and enhancing the role of judicial institutions and specialized international mechanisms, ensuring that those responsible for crimes are held accountable according to fair legal procedures. The international community is called upon not to be satisfied with statements of condemnation, but to link its positions and actions to the extent of respect for international law and the protection of civilians, away from selectivity or double standards.
The demand for accountability does not mean closing the doors to political settlement; rather, justice represents one of the conditions for its success, because peace that ignores the rights of victims remains fragile, and an agreement that does not address the root causes of violence merely postpones the conflict without resolving it.
It is certain that holding the Houthis accountable for the documented crimes against them represents a fundamental step towards restoring the state, preserving human dignity, and protecting the security of Yemen and the region.
