The director of the Didev National Medical Research Center for Endocrinology under the Russian Ministry of Health, Dr. Natalia Mukrishiva, warned about the health risks of obesity, confirming its association with an increased likelihood of developing 13 types of cancer, including colorectal cancer and breast cancer.
Mukrishiva explained during a press conference titled “Obesity and Metabolic Disorders” that obesity is no longer just an issue related to appearance, but has become a health concern that goes beyond the cosmetic aspect, due to its association with several serious diseases.
She pointed out that cancer diseases also contribute to an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, emphasizing that combating obesity in children and adults can help reduce the likelihood of cancer and chronic diseases.
In this context, Russian Health Minister Mikhail Murashko had previously noted that alcohol consumption increases the risk of cancer by 3 to 5%, while obesity raises this risk by 30%.
Murashko stressed the importance of prevention and early diagnosis as key factors in reducing disease incidence and related mortality rates.
