Beijing accused a U.S. warship today (Tuesday) of entering waters near a disputed maritime area in the South China Sea without obtaining Beijing’s approval, considering the U.S. move a violation of its sovereign rights and a threat to maritime security and regional stability.

The Southern Theater Command of the Chinese military announced that the American ship “USS Charleston,” a coastal combat vessel, entered waters near the “Sabina Shoal” within the disputed Spratly Islands, without permission from Chinese authorities.

Chinese Forces Tracking the American Ship

The Chinese navy explained that it deployed naval forces to track the American ship and monitor its movements, asserting that its entry into the area without Beijing’s approval represents, from China’s perspective, a violation of its sovereignty and maritime rights.

The Chinese military leadership considered that U.S. movements threaten maritime security and do not contribute to maintaining peace and stability in the region, calling on the United States to stop what it described as activities that violate Chinese sovereignty.

The Chinese forces confirmed their continued state of alert and readiness to protect what they consider their sovereignty, security, and interests in the South China Sea.

Sovereignty Dispute Between China and the Philippines

The “Sabina Shoal” area is located within the Spratly archipelago in the South China Sea, with sovereignty over it disputed between China and the Philippines, amid ongoing disagreements regarding maritime rights and control over islands, reefs, and waterways.

Beijing insists on its sovereign claims in the region, while Manila opposes these claims and asserts its maritime rights, amidst recurring tensions between the vessels of both countries.

The Philippines has a mutual defense treaty with the United States, which gives the maritime disputes in the region a security significance that goes beyond the bilateral conflict between Beijing and Manila.

Lack of Immediate U.S. Comment

The U.S. Navy did not issue an immediate response to the Chinese accusations, according to Reuters, while details regarding the duration of the ship’s presence in the area or the nature of the mission it was carrying out remain unclear.

This incident comes amid ongoing tensions regarding sovereignty and freedom of navigation in the South China Sea, which has witnessed repeated disputes between China and several countries in the region, alongside the U.S. military presence.
