The emergence of an app impersonating (WhatsApp) has sparked a wave of warnings among smartphone users, after it managed to achieve over 500,000 downloads via the (Google Play) store, benefiting from a significant resemblance to the original app that made its detection difficult for many.
A technical report revealed that the imitation app appeared on the (Google Play) store since last September, carrying the name (WhatsApp), with a design and visual elements that closely resemble the official version, including profile images and app descriptions, which boosted user confidence and led many to download it.
This was not the first incident of its kind, as it came just days after another fake app impersonating the (Google Chrome) browser was spotted, successfully attracting over 100,000 downloads before it was removed, raising questions about the ability of some imitation apps to bypass scrutiny and reach users.
One of the main factors that helped the fake app spread was its appearance among some users in the sponsored advertising results when searching for WhatsApp within the (Google Play) store; this could lead many to believe it is the official app, especially with the significant similarity in name, logo, and content.
The report indicated that the app was published by a developer account that does not have other known apps on the store, and it is likely that it benefited from the (early access) system, a mechanism that may limit the visibility of user reviews, reducing the chances of detecting suspicions related to the app in its early stages.
In light of this incident, tech experts emphasized the necessity of verifying the official developer’s name before installing any app, and not just relying on reviewing the name or logo alone; due to the ease of imitating them. It is also advised to access the app through the official service website or through approved links, while being cautious of the advertising results that may appear at the top of the search.
So far, no confirmed information has been released regarding the potential damages that those who downloaded the app may have faced, thus there is no conclusive evidence of its involvement in data theft or spying on users, but experts see this incident as a new reminder of the importance of scrutiny before installing any app, no matter how familiar or trustworthy it may seem.
