A report from the International Energy Agency revealed that gas is significantly returning as an input for energy production in artificial intelligence data centers. Technology companies are racing to find electricity sources capable of meeting the increasing demands of data centers, at a time when new projects are facing delays in connecting to power grids.
In this context, natural gas emerges as a prominent option for securing stable supplies, alongside continued investment in renewable energy and storage technologies.
The International Energy Agency’s report “Powering Artificial Intelligence: Strategies for Integrating Data Centers into Electricity Systems” outlines the challenges posed by the expansion of data centers on local grids, from long waiting lists for connections to limited grid capacities, delays in permits, and availability of electrical equipment.
Investments in this sector go beyond just building data centers; capital expenditures for the largest data center operators are expected to exceed $700 billion by 2026, most of which is allocated for developing new facilities. The scale of these investments increases the pressure to secure electricity at the pace required by the expansion of artificial intelligence applications.
According to the report, the difficulty in obtaining quick electrical connections has led some data center developers to establish power generation stations on their sites, with natural gas highlighted among the options, especially in the United States. These projects allow for electricity generation close to the loads, but they do not eliminate the need for public grids, as most data center operators still seek to connect to them.
