A recent study revealed that engaging in a small amount of physical activity daily may be sufficient to improve sleep quality and increase deep sleep periods, even among individuals who do not engage in long or strenuous workouts.

The study was conducted by researchers from the University of Texas at Austin, who found that about 10 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity each day was associated with better sleep indicators, along with improved mood the following day.

Short Activity with Notable Benefits

The researchers focused on the relationship between daily movement and sleep, noting that participants who engaged in regular physical activity experienced deeper sleep compared to those who were less active.

The benefits were not limited to intense workouts, as the results indicated that light movement throughout the day, such as walking or increasing usual activity, was also linked to improvements in certain aspects of sleep and mood.

No Need to Go to the Gym

The findings suggest that improving sleep may not require a lengthy exercise program or daily trips to the gym, as short periods of movement can contribute to noticeable benefits when done consistently.

The researchers believe that physical activity may help the body regulate the sleep-wake cycle, in addition to its role in reducing stress and improving mood, factors that are themselves related to sleep quality.

Consistency is More Important than Duration

The results emphasized the importance of regular movement over focusing on long and infrequent workout sessions, making the inclusion of just 10 minutes of exercise into the daily routine a simple step that can be easily implemented.

The researchers noted that the findings bolster the growing evidence of a close relationship between physical activity and sleep, with a need for further studies to understand the mechanisms that allow daily movement to affect the depth and quality of sleep in the long term.
