A U.S. federal appeals court today allowed the state of Florida to enforce a law that prohibits children under the age of 14 from using social media platforms.
In a unanimous ruling, a panel of three judges from the Atlanta-based appeals court overturned a preliminary injunction issued by a lower court that had halted the enforcement of the law.
The law prohibits social media platforms that feature what are termed “addictive features”—such as autoplay videos and endless scrolling—from allowing children under 14 to create accounts.
Florida was one of the first states to enact a law regulating children’s use of social media, amid a broader discussion about the role of apps in affecting the mental health of minors.
