The Lebanese President Joseph Aoun reaffirmed his country’s commitment to the presence of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), amid the Israeli occupation of villages and towns in southern Lebanon.
The Lebanese presidency stated in a statement today (Wednesday) that Aoun informed the UN Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix of Lebanon’s insistence on the continuation of UNIFIL forces due to the importance of the role they have played since the beginning of their mission.
Aoun stated that the circumstances resulting from Israeli attacks and the occupation of southern villages and towns, most of which fall within the scope of UNIFIL operations, make the presence of international forces extremely important, as their withdrawal would create a vacuum that would have negative repercussions on the security situation in the region, in addition to the absence of any international oversight of what is happening there.
He expressed hope that the United Nations Security Council would respond to Lebanon’s request to maintain the operational mandate of UNIFIL during the coming year, especially if the withdrawal of Israeli forces to the international borders and the deployment of the Lebanese army is achieved, according to the statement.
Another statement from the Lebanese presidency quoted the UN official as saying: “Regarding the future of the United Nations presence, I believe discussions in the Security Council will now begin, and it is important, indeed essential, that Lebanon’s voice is heard on this matter, as it is the country directly concerned with this issue.”
Lacroix added: Our goal is to support efforts aimed at restoring stability to Lebanon and the region, and to regain full Lebanese sovereignty. We believe that the United Nations is still capable of playing a role in this context.
The UN official began an official visit to Lebanon, during which he will meet with Lebanese officials to discuss the future of “UNIFIL” and the extension of its mission, in addition to the security and field arrangements related to its role in southern Lebanon and the phase following the determination of its future tasks. Lacroix will meet with the Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament Nabih Berri and the Prime Minister Nawaf Salam.
The European Union Council adopted a decision on Monday to establish a new support mission in Lebanon for an initial period of three years, aimed at enhancing the capabilities of the army and internal security forces and supporting the country’s sovereignty and stability. The mandate of the “UNIFIL” mission ends at the end of the current year 2026, while Lebanon insists on its continued presence as one of the elements of stability in the south.
Since 1978, “UNIFIL” has been deployed under resolutions issued by the Security Council to monitor the cessation of hostilities and assist in maintaining security and stability in the region.
