The World Health Organization is pressuring Russia to reveal the precise circumstances surrounding the death of an employee at a plague research institute in Siberia, after requesting more information about the cause of death, while the Kremlin confirmed that Moscow has provided all available data and accused the media of spreading incorrect information.

The Organization Needs Additional Information

Russian authorities state that the laboratory employee, aged 28, died on Friday from pneumonia of undetermined cause, an incident that has raised widespread international concern, including from U.S. President Donald Trump, and initially resulted in around 200 people being quarantined. The Russian health oversight agency announced that no cases of plague had been recorded among those who had contact with the employee, Daria Shibelova, while a local official noted that 60% of those who were quarantined have already been released.

The Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, stated in a message on the platform (X) that the organization needs additional information to fully understand what happened, clarifying that the request includes clarification of the cause of the acute pneumonia and the pathogen that necessitated health measures, in addition to media reports about a second employee suffering from pneumonia of undetermined cause. Ghebreyesus emphasized that timely, complete, and transparent information exchange, according to international health regulations, is essential to clarify conflicting reports and enable accurate assessment of potential public health risks.

What is Being Published About the Incident is Incorrect

In contrast, the Kremlin stated that Russia informed the organization about the incident according to established procedures, urging caution in dealing with media reports regarding a second person’s infection, and indicating that much of what is being published about the incident is incorrect.

Peskov commented on a report by ABC News that stated the United States had filed an official diplomatic complaint regarding Russia’s handling of the employee’s death, urging Moscow for more transparency. Peskov said that most of what the media is reporting about the situation is “false information,” calling for reliance on data from the Russian health oversight agency (Rospotrebnadzor), which did not respond to a request for comment.

Pneumonia Has Multiple Causes

The exact cause of death remains unknown, although some Western media outlets, citing unspecified sources, have circulated claims of a second person dying from plague in Siberia, claims that Reuters was unable to find any supporting evidence for in Russian media. The World Health Organization clarified that it has nothing to add to what its Director-General has published, who was scheduled to hold a press conference later.

Ghebreyesus’s request followed a similar call from U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who stated that Moscow should share more information regarding the incident. The Russian health oversight agency confirms that Shibelova died after contracting pneumonia, without clarifying the cause of the illness or how the infection was transmitted, noting that pneumonia can result from multiple causes, including plague, other types of bacterial infections, or viral respiratory diseases such as influenza or the coronavirus.
