The Yemeni Ministry of Human Rights condemned, in the strongest terms, the attack launched by the Iranian-backed Houthi militia on Aden International Airport early today (Wednesday) with two ballistic missiles and explosive drones, in an assault that targeted a vital civilian facility and endangered the lives of travelers, workers, and flight crews, threatening the safety of air navigation.
The ministry clarified in a statement that one of the missiles fell near the airport runway just minutes before the landing of Yemen Airways flight number 603 coming from the Egyptian capital, Cairo, which had several civilian passengers on board, while the attack endangered the lives of passengers waiting for a flight to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, in addition to the workers, employees, and flight crews at the airport.
The ministry emphasized that targeting Aden International Airport and its civilian facilities constitutes a grave violation of the rules of international humanitarian law that prohibit targeting civilians and civilian objects, and it infringes upon the citizens’ right to life, security, and movement, in addition to threatening a vital outlet that citizens rely on for travel, medical treatment, and returning to the country.
The ministry pointed out that this assault recalls the missile attack launched by the Houthi militia on Aden International Airport on December 30, 2020, coinciding with the arrival of the Yemeni government, which resulted in casualties and injuries and caused damage to the airport and its facilities, noting that the repeated targeting of the civilian facility confirms the ongoing risks threatening the lives of civilians and vital installations.
The Ministry of Human Rights called on the international community and relevant international organizations and bodies concerned with human rights and the safety of civil aviation to condemn this assault and take positions and practical measures to ensure the protection of civilian facilities and halt their targeting, urging the Security Council and the United Nations to fulfill their responsibilities in protecting civilians and civil facilities and to exert the necessary pressure to stop these assaults. The ministry stressed the necessity of holding accountable anyone who planned, ordered, or participated in executing this assault, and ensuring that those responsible do not escape accountability and punishment.
