The primary court in the capital Tunis issued heavy prison sentences ranging from 30 to 40 years against members of a female network involved in the smuggling and trafficking of cocaine, in a case that revealed the defendants’ use of precise camouflage methods to introduce the shipment through one of the border crossings.
The sentences came after the criminal chamber reviewed the case file, where it sentenced the defendants to long prison terms, in addition to financial fines ranging from 50,000 to 100,000 dinars, and subjected them to administrative monitoring for ten years following the completion of their prison sentences.
The details of the case date back to a security operation carried out at the La Goulette port, when one of the female travelers arriving from abroad raised the suspicions of customs and security personnel, leading to a thorough search of her luggage using X-ray machines.
The search revealed a quantity of cocaine hidden inside secret compartments in a bag designated for cosmetics, in an attempt to camouflage it from the monitoring devices and divert suspicion from the contents of the bag.
Subsequent security and judicial investigations revealed the existence of an internal organization within the network, where female members distributed roles between shipping and passing through border crossings, leading to the receipt and distribution of narcotic substances within the country.
The investigations did not stop with the traveler who was caught with the shipment, as the inquiries led to the arrest of the other members of the network inside an apartment, where another bag containing a quantity of cocaine was found.
The defendants were charged with joining a gang with the intent to commit drug-related crimes and importing a narcotic substance for the purpose of trafficking, before the court issued its final rulings in the case.
