Goldman Sachs expects diesel prices to remain high through 2027 in order to curb global demand, amid the operational challenges faced by global refineries in meeting consumption and replenishing strategic stocks.

The bank believes that the average refining margins for diesel and jet fuel globally (the difference between the price of the refined product and the price of crude) are set to exceed $40 per barrel by 2027, which is more than double the usual levels of around $20, according to CNBC.

The bank anticipates that the global refining network will face increasing pressures due to a contraction in refining capacity outside of China by about 300,000 barrels per day during 2026, amid disruptions in supplies from the Middle East and Russia, along with the fact that U.S. refineries will need to carry out maintenance operations that have been postponed.

Goldman Sachs analysts clarified that maintaining high price levels is essential to curbing direct demand and restoring stability in the sector, warning that any recovery in consumption next year will force refineries to operate at the highest rates seen in the past two decades.
