North Korea criticized the United States for its arms sales and military support to Taiwan, accusing Washington of fueling tensions in the Taiwan Strait and threatening peace and stability in the region, according to the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on Wednesday.
The agency quoted North Korean international affairs analyst Kim Myung-chul as saying that U.S. policy toward Taiwan undermines regional peace and stability, at a time when the region is experiencing increasing tensions due to the dispute between Beijing and Taipei and U.S. military support for the island.
The commentary criticized the presence of American-made fighter jets in Taiwan, warning the United States to carefully consider its ability to confront China and the potential repercussions of such a confrontation.
Arrival of the first new “F-16” fighter jets in Taiwan
The remarks from Pyongyang came after the arrival of the first two out of 66 “F-16 Block 70” aircraft ordered by Taiwan in 2019, which reached the island last week.
As Taiwan seeks to enhance its defensive capabilities amid rising military pressures from China, which considers the island part of its territory and opposes any U.S. military support for it, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un reaffirmed his full support for the “One China” principle during his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Pyongyang in June. This principle is one that Beijing believes includes both sides of the Taiwan Strait as part of one state, regardless of developments in the international arena.
The meeting also cautiously touched on defense cooperation between Beijing and Pyongyang, with Xi announcing that the two countries would strengthen exchanges in the fields of diplomacy, law enforcement, military affairs, and others, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
Beijing rejects U.S. military support for Taiwan
China considers Taiwan, which has a democratic government, part of its territory and describes the issue of the island as one of the “core issues” in its relations with other countries.
Beijing demands that foreign countries refrain from establishing any form of official relations with the Taiwanese leadership, while the Taiwanese government asserts that China has no right to claim the island or represent it on the international stage.
China is an ally of North Korea under a treaty, and Washington has repeatedly called for an end to arms sales to Taiwan.
In contrast, U.S. laws require Washington to provide the means for Taiwan to defend itself, despite the absence of official diplomatic relations between the United States and Taiwan.
Pyongyang renews its support for Russia
In a separate context, the KCNA announced that the North Korean leader renewed his support for Russia and its military efforts in a congratulatory message sent to Russian President Vladimir Putin on the occasion of his birthday.
Kim Jong-un stated that Pyongyang would continue to expand joint cooperation with Moscow within the framework of the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries.
He also expressed his conviction that what he described as the “just and sacred” Russian war to defend sovereignty, security interests, and territorial integrity would end in victory, according to the North Korean agency.
The message did not explicitly refer to the Russian war in Ukraine.
Increasing military cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang
Estimates or strategic links of North Korea with both Russia and China, at a time when security tensions in Ukraine and South Korea are rising, suggest that North Korea has sent an estimated 14,000 to 15,000 soldiers to support Russia in its war with Ukraine since 2024.
Relations between Moscow and Pyongyang have seen a notable rapprochement since Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un signed a mutual defense treaty in June 2024.
The rising cooperation between the two countries, alongside Pyongyang’s reaffirmation of its support for the “One China” principle, reflects the growing strategic ties of North Korea with both Russia and China, at a time when security tensions in East Asia are increasing and disputes over Taiwan are escalating.
