The letters in our Arabic language are considered pillars in their own right, each carrying within it a history of expression and a breadth of meaning. It contains within its folds twenty-eight letters, each letter holding a story and a tale. Among these unique letters, the letter “kaf” stands tall, combining grammatical precision, rhetorical beauty, and an astonishing ability to transform and shape in the tongues of Arabs and their tribes throughout history. This is the “tale of kaf,” a letter that has not settled for being merely a phonetic output, but has become a tool for simile, a cornerstone in grammar, and a mirror reflecting the diversity of dialects. This is not the case for the letter kaf alone; it is the tale of every letter, so it is not strange that the entire Arabic language is attributed to a single letter that distinguishes it, one that no other language shares, hence it is referred to as “the language of the letter Dhad.” When the master of eloquence is praised, it is said of him:
O most eloquent of all speakers of Dhad… Your speech is honey to the discerning listener.
From the farthest part of the tongue, along with what is adjacent to the upper palate, the letter kaf emerges. As soon as the sound of kaf touches the farthest part of the palate, the meaning materializes from the darkness of non-existence to the light of presence, as if it were a sweet musical sound crafted by a skilled player striking the strings of a lute or an organ player tapping the keys of sound. The letter kaf is not just a letter that passes through the lips, crafted and molded, conveying a meaning independent of its similar letter qaf; rather, it is the tool of cosmic embodiment and the scalpel of expression. It is the tool of simile by which rhetoric draws the boundaries of comparison, connecting earth with sky, blending beauty and charm with the light of the moon and the dawn of the sun, courage and daring with the prowess of a lion, as if it holds objects to bring them closer to the reader’s insight, as if they are touched by the eye. It makes abstract meanings take the form of tangible realities, from the kaf of address that defines the beloved and the companion, to the supreme kaf of creation in the eternal “Be” upon which the cosmos revolves between the noon and the beginning of will, so that the letter kaf remains a steadfast pillar in the structure of language; it combines the harshness of strength with the gentleness of whisper, oscillating between the severity of eloquence and the flexibility of colloquialisms, willingly on the tongues of lovers and eloquent speakers, remaining an oasis in its own right, overflowing with magic and expression, and the letter kaf is the first letter of: word.
The kaf is a letter of address, masculine and feminine, open for masculine reference with breadth and spaciousness, broken in respect and reverence for the feminine, expressing presence, addressing the near, bringing the distant closer, completing the incomplete, and perfecting the complete. It is a unique letter in its connotation; it does not enter a word unless it brings with it completeness and wholeness. It is a letter added to express possession and companionship. Our scholars preceded linguists in discussing “deriving states from events,” or what is known today as Phonetic Symbolism; where the articulation of the letter and its characteristics are linked to the meaning it conveys. This is what Ibn Faris applied in his dictionaries, Al-Mujmal and Al-Maqayis al-Lugha. Through the type of letters used in a word, one can discern its meanings. It is not surprising that many Arabic dictionaries, even the earliest ones, are arranged phonetically according to the articulations or characteristics of the letters, and the position of the letter in the word indicates its meanings, as the articulation of the letter, its characteristics, and the way it is pointed are shared with others, and its position in the word determines the meaning, such as the first Arabic dictionary compiled by Al-Khalil, followed by Al-Jamhara by Ibn Durayd, and Al-Sihah by Al-Jawhari.
If we contemplate the letter kaf in the balance of sounds, we will find it occupies a unique position that combines “strength” and “whisper.” It is a strong sound because the breath is held at its articulation at the farthest part of the tongue, and it is whispered because air flows with it when the articulation opens. This combination of strength and flow has granted kaf distinctive semantic properties in the Arabic lexicon: the connotation of embodiment and tight connection. Because kaf is a strong letter that emerges from the farthest part of the palate with the tongue, the Arabs chose it as a tool for direct connection and definitive comparison, as if pronouncing it reflects the process of “embodying” meaning and bringing it closer to the mind (as if it is like this). Comprehensiveness and coherence in structure and meaning: Consider the words that begin with the letter kaf or are situated within it; you will find that they often indicate coverage, completeness, or gathering, such as: (KABARA, KAMULA, KATABA, KASA), as if the sound of kaf suggests the closure of meaning and its stability, just as kaf suggests when it meets with noon in words of completion and perfection, like all verbs of being “KAN and its derivatives.”
If we look at the use of the letter in Arab societies, it has undergone changes and substitutions with other letters, extending to authentic Arabic dialects. The letter kaf has been regarded as a living mirror of the history of Arab tribes and the evolution of their tongues over the ages, due to the sensitive position of its articulation at the farthest part of the tongue, which has made it susceptible to shaping and diversity. Thus, ancient heritage phenomena have emerged, such as: “kashkasha”: replacing the feminine addressing kaf with a sheen “Alesh, Kitabsh,” and I have a humorous anecdote from my dealings with the Hasawi community, which still retains this dialect, as I addressed males, who laughed with their mouths wide open, as this is only for females! Among the changes is “kaskasa”: replacing it with a seen “Alaik’s and the shanshana and the tashtasha or the chafchafa (CH): pronouncing it as a mixed sound close to the heavy jim, such as in the dialects of the Gulf, Najd, Al-Ahsa, Iraq, and some Egyptian villages. I still remember during school radio days when a rural classmate in Egypt told me: I want to present a “jalma” tomorrow on the radio, which I later understood meant he wanted to present a “kalima”! Thus, the letter kaf remains, in the end, a living witness to the genius of the Arabic tongue; it is the letter that combines the severity of eloquence with the warmth of dialects, the precision of the lexicon with the beauty of rhetorical images, the secret of formation in the Qur’anic miracle, and the philosophy of the twenty-eight Arabic letters, where each letter carries a tale and concepts that perhaps a lifetime is not enough to stand with them to understand the divine secret of choosing the Arabic letter to express God’s intent, which requires efforts from linguistics scholars to study and compare them with their counterparts in other languages.
