There is a gap between what is said about Iran and what is happening around it that is hard to ignore. U.S. President Donald Trump says he will not strike before the American elections, and Netanyahu rules out an attack before the Israeli elections. But at the same time, aircraft carriers are moving, military plans are being finalized, and the U.S. Secretary of Defense is meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu away from the spotlight, while Israel tests its ability to reach Iran. If the decision for war is indeed postponed, why do preparations seem to indicate that the zero hour is approaching?

Perhaps because the question has changed. Does the war start before the elections or after? And do the American and Israeli statements represent a real time frame that prevents war, or do they give Tehran a temporary sense of security before a surprise strike similar to what occurred before the rounds in June 2025 and March 2026?

The second possibility is reinforced by the fact that the diplomatic track itself is nearly losing its function. After the stalling of negotiations in New York, there have been no serious signs of a settlement capable of bridging the gap between Washington and Tehran, while the center of gravity has gradually shifted from negotiation rooms to operations rooms. The escalation with the Houthis, along with the international shifts surrounding the Iranian file, has added a new layer of pressure on Tehran.

The most important developments are happening militarily

U.S. reports speak of plans prepared by the Pentagon for the possibility of resuming operations against Iran, which include options targeting nuclear facilities and energy infrastructure, coinciding with a significant U.S. naval buildup in the region. Readiness does not necessarily mean that Trump has issued a war order, but it does mean that the option of force is not a hypothetical scenario requiring months of preparation.

Then came U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth’s visit to Israel, adding a signal that is hard to ignore. The unannounced meeting with Netanyahu at Ovda Air Base is not a ceremonial gathering, and the Iranian file was at its core, amid discussions about what the next phase of confrontation could look like.

Politically, the relationship between war and elections seems clearer. Trump’s support for Netanyahu is not separate from Iran, especially since the Israeli Prime Minister presents himself to voters as the man capable of continuing what he started against the Iranian nuclear program. Netanyahu, for his part, has raised the stakes by announcing a security concept based on initiative, preemptive attack, and reducing reliance on American support.

Nevertheless, there remains one window that could overturn the calculations: last-minute Iranian concessions that bring negotiations back to the forefront. If positions remain unchanged, the end of the elections may remove the last political constraint on escalation.

For this reason, perhaps the most dangerous moment for Iran is the day after the elections. With the conclusion of both the Israeli and American elections, the time constraint imposed by Trump and Netanyahu themselves before any attack on Iran falls away.

And then the question will be: what remains to delay the “third round”?
