A 10-hour flight from Istanbul to Washington became a hot topic on social media after American travel blogger Tomiko Harvey refused to give up her aisle seat in response to a request from a passenger who wanted to sit next to her husband for the entire flight.

According to a report published by NDTV, Harvey recounted the details of the incident in a video on her Instagram account, which garnered thousands of views. She said that the woman sitting next to her spent about 3 hours crying after she refused to give up her seat.

Harvey was returning to the United States after attending her father’s funeral, which prompted her to ask the passenger why she was crying and whether she had received news of the death of someone close to her. However, the woman’s answer was different; she explained that she had not lost anyone, but she missed her husband and wanted to rest her head on his shoulder during the long flight.

The blogger added that the husband was only two seats away from her in the same row, occupying a middle seat separated by two rows, but he remained asleep with his headphones on, unaware of his wife’s crying throughout the flight.

Through her account, Harvey raised the issue of seat swapping on airplanes, criticizing the expectation of some passengers that others should give up their reserved seats to accommodate their wishes. She emphasized that those who wish to sit next to their family members can choose appropriate seats before the flight, even if it requires paying extra fees, instead of relying on the consent of other passengers.

The blogger’s stance received notable engagement, as many social media users supported her, considering that seat arrangements are the responsibility of the traveler themselves, and that keeping a pre-booked seat is a right that does not warrant feelings of guilt, especially when asked to give it up for someone else.
