The Canadian authorities announced the transfer of 39 injured individuals to hospitals, including 19 in critical condition, following a fire that broke out at the “Wainwright” military base in Alberta province, western Canada. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney had earlier confirmed the death of four military personnel in the fire, which erupted (on Saturday) during a military training exercise.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith stated yesterday (Sunday) that the injured were taken to four hospitals in the province, including two hospitals in Edmonton, one in Red Deer, and a fourth in Calgary, noting that some of the injured suffered severe burns that may require intensive treatment lasting weeks or months.

Strong Winds Accelerate the Spread of Flames

The Canadian Department of Defense explained that the fire broke out around 4 PM (Saturday) local time within a military training area at the “Wainwright” base, before quickly spreading beyond the training zone. Military officials reported that sudden winds pushed the flames toward the soldiers participating in the training, while Major General Wade Rutland indicated that the fire traveled nearly one kilometer in about 30 seconds, trapping the military personnel.

Extensive Medical Mobilization to Transport the Injured

Rescue and medical evacuation operations involved 22 ambulances, six planes, and two helicopters, with assistance from the neighboring province of Saskatchewan, while Alberta health authorities announced the termination of the medical emergency known as “code orange,” which was activated to accommodate the large number of injured.

Investigations to Uncover the Causes of the Incident

For its part, the Canadian Armed Forces confirmed that there are no indications linking the fire to terrorist activity, while the Royal Canadian Mounted Police is participating in the investigations to determine its causes and circumstances.
