The US dollar declined during trading on (Friday), heading towards recording its first weekly loss in over a month against the euro and the Japanese yen, as investor expectations diminished regarding the Federal Reserve’s potential interest rate hike during its upcoming meeting at the end of October, amid increasing concerns about the performance of AI companies’ stocks.
The dollar index, which measures the performance of the US currency against a basket of six major currencies, fell by 0.42% to 101.61 points, heading towards a weekly loss of about 0.6%, after being pressured by declining US Treasury yields and changing monetary policy expectations.
Declining Odds of US Rate Hike
The dollar’s decline came despite the release of data showing that consumer and producer prices in the United States rose more than expected, which initially raised concerns about the persistence of inflationary pressures and the possibility of the Fed taking additional measures to tighten monetary policy.
However, comments from several officials at the US central bank, indicating that there was no urgent need to raise interest rates again, helped calm the markets and reduce bets on increased borrowing costs this month.
Market estimates showed an increase in the likelihood of keeping interest rates steady at the October meeting to about 85%, according to data from the CME Group’s “FedWatch” tool, indicating a shift in investor expectations towards maintaining the monetary policy unchanged.
AI Concerns Weigh on the Dollar
The decline of the US currency coincided with a sell-off in stocks of companies linked to artificial intelligence, the effects of which extended to some sectors of the credit markets, amid investors’ questions about the ability of companies that are pouring massive investments into data centers and computing infrastructure to generate sufficient returns to meet their financial obligations.
These concerns led to increased demand for US Treasury bonds, contributing to a decline in their yields, and weakened one of the factors that had supported the dollar in recent times.
Analysts believe that concerns regarding the sustainability of investments in artificial intelligence have begun to have a greater impact on currency market movements, alongside traditional expectations related to interest rates and monetary policy.
The Euro, Pound, and Franc Gain
In the currency markets, the euro rose by 0.33% to 1.1255 dollars, heading towards a weekly gain of about 0.48%, after recovering from consecutive losses over the past weeks.
The British pound also increased by 0.60% to 1.3353 dollars, recording a weekly rise of about 0.92%.
The dollar fell against the Swiss franc by 0.48% to 0.8228 francs, while the Swiss currency benefited from increased demand for safe havens.
Against the Japanese yen, the dollar decreased by 0.12% to 157.79 yen, with the yen heading towards recording its first weekly gains after four consecutive weeks of decline.
Markets Await Fed Decision
Investors are turning their attention to the Federal Reserve meeting scheduled for late October, seeking additional indicators regarding the future of US interest rates and the central bank’s readiness to take new steps to combat inflation.
Despite the decline in expectations for a rate hike in October, the possibility of action in December remains open, given the ongoing inflationary pressures and the uncertainty surrounding the US economy.
The movements of the dollar in the coming period are expected to remain linked to inflation data and economic activity, alongside the performance of stock and bond markets and developments in the artificial intelligence sector.
