The Turkish authorities have detained 42 people out of 53 suspects in a case related to an international network suspected of being involved in extracting eggs from Turkish women and selling them to medical centers abroad, following investigations that revealed the network’s activities extended to several countries, according to local media reports.
Turkish security received a report from a husband against his wife Hagar, accusing her of having a relationship with a pharmacist and collaborating with him in organizing egg extraction operations and marketing them to medical centers outside Turkey. Despite prior information about the network’s activities, the husband’s report contributed to uncovering additional details, as investigators found, according to reports, that his wife is suspected of leading the operations.
In a wide security move, the police carried out simultaneous raids in 14 provinces, including Istanbul, and arrested Hagar, along with two gynecologists and individuals responsible for organizing travel and coordinating between the network’s parties. The case also involved more than 40 young women suspected of participating in egg donation operations for money.
Initial investigations, according to the reports, showed that Hagar began her activities by offering her eggs for financial amounts before later moving on to recruiting other women and coordinating their travel to Northern Cyprus for donation procedures.
The suspected network’s activities were not limited to Turkey and Northern Cyprus but extended, according to circulating information about the case, to Georgia, Albania, and Croatia. Investigations indicate that 41 Turkish women sold their eggs for amounts ranging between 60 and 80 euros per egg, while the network received about 100 euros from IVF centers outside Turkey for each egg, with total revenues estimated at around two million euros from hundreds of sales.
The investigations also revealed a method suspected to have been used by Hagar and her pharmacist friend to attract clients, as they would take photos and videos of women wishing to donate their eggs, then present them to individuals seeking to conceive and specifying certain characteristics for the donor, including blonde hair and colored eyes.
Details of the case are still linked to what the investigations have uncovered and the accusations mentioned in local reports, while security measures included dozens of suspects in one of the cases that highlighted cross-border activities in the trade of eggs.
