The authorities in Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta, are studying the introduction of air transport services using helicopters as part of the public transport system, as part of a plan to expand the activities of “TransJakarta,” the bus operator, to include maritime and air transport in the future, amid questions about economic feasibility, operating costs, and ticket prices.

According to a report published by Singapore’s “The Straits Times” today (Monday), Jakarta’s Governor Anies Baswedan aims to transform the company from a bus operator into an institution that offers multimodal transport services, in line with the significant population growth and traffic challenges facing the capital.

Helicopters in Future Transport Plans

The Governor of Jakarta explained that air transport represents one of the options that should be prepared for in the medium and long term, noting that the capital has about 11 million residents, while the population of its metropolitan area reaches approximately 42 million.

He pointed out that global cities, including New York, have established regulatory frameworks for air transport services, emphasizing the importance of preparing the necessary legislation and permits before starting similar services in Jakarta.

The proposed options include the use of helicopters or other air transport means, without announcing yet the type of aircraft that will be used or a specific date for the start of operations.
