In an era where technological advancement races to dominate the details of our lives, following AI-powered chatbots has transcended the boundaries of answering general questions to invade sensitive and dangerous areas that could lead their users into fatal pitfalls. Instead of being a lifeline, these technologies have caused repeated incidents requiring rescue teams to retrieve adventurers misled by algorithms in the most perilous mountain paths.

In the latest of these terrifying incidents, a teenager experienced harrowing moments atop Crown Mountain in British Columbia, Canada. After taking a gondola to ascend over 4,000 feet, the teenager relied on the chatbot “Claude” from Anthropic for guidance on how to return, only for the bot to direct him away from the designated path.

However, the incorrect advice led the teenager to find himself stuck at the base of a massive and steep rock formation, bearing a name that is both mocking and frightening: “Widowmaker,” which literally means “maker of widows”!

Despite the danger of the situation and the possibility of a fatal fall, the young man successfully made the decision to call for help. Upon receiving the alert, the North Shore Rescue team mobilized, where two members had to rappel down a steep rock wall that helicopters could not approach, to secure and evacuate the teenager with great difficulty.

In a comment on the incident, Paul Markey, the director of search and rescue operations, issued a stern warning to the public about the dangers of trusting AI applications in open spaces, emphasizing that these models have not undergone real experiences in those paths and do not understand their hazardous geography.

The story does not end there; just a few weeks ago, three individuals endured a plight that lasted more than a full day in the Cascade Mountains of California, after Google’s “Gemini” model misled their group by providing incorrect estimates that dangerously underestimated the amounts of food and water needed for their trip, turning a hours-long outing into a real nightmare.

These recurring incidents confirm that blind reliance on AI for exploration and land navigation can be a one-way ticket, necessitating dependence on human knowledge, documented maps, and prior training before embarking on dangerous adventures.
