The tension between Ethiopia and Eritrea escalated on Friday after Addis Ababa accused its northern neighbor of aggression against its territory, asserting that Eritrean forces had penetrated 60 kilometers into the Tigray region.
Eritrea responded by accusing Addis Ababa of seeking to wage war to seize a maritime outlet on the Red Sea.
Ethiopia accused Eritrea in a message sent to the United Nations of violating its sovereignty and encroaching into its territory, in a development that reflects the rising disputes between the two countries. Eritrea, on the other hand, considered that Ethiopian threats did not begin with the recent developments, but date back to October 2023, when Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed raised the issue of his country’s access to a maritime outlet.
Eritrea Accuses Ethiopia of Declaring War
The Eritrean Ministry of Information accused the Ethiopian government of following a hostile policy towards Asmara for more than three years, considering that Abiy Ahmed’s statements before Parliament on October 13, 2023, marked the beginning of this trend. According to the Eritrean narrative, Abiy Ahmed announced at that time his country’s pursuit of “sovereign access to the sea, through negotiations if possible, and by force if necessary.” Asmara responded at that time by calling for restraint, emphasizing that it would not be drawn into what it described as provocations. The ministry added that Abiy Ahmed launched repeated campaigns to rally domestic support for his agenda concerning the Red Sea. It accused the Prosperity Party, the ruling party in Ethiopia, of citing Israel’s annexation of the Golan Heights as a precedent that could be referenced in claiming the Eritrean city of Assab. The statement noted that Ethiopian officials have gone so far as to question Eritrea’s independence, through statements claiming that there are no legal documents in the archives of Ethiopian government institutions related to its independence.
Assab Port at the Heart of the Dispute
The Eritrean Ministry of Information spoke about statements attributed to the Chief of Staff of the Ethiopian Army, in which he said that military operations would not stop at the Tigray region. According to Asmara, the statements included that the city of Mekelle is merely a stop along the way, and that the final destination is Assab Port, with the aim of raising the Ethiopian flag over the Red Sea. Eritrea accused Addis Ababa of repeatedly directing calls to the army, considering that its primary mission includes ensuring the security of the Red Sea, from the Somali border to the Eritrean port of Massawa. It affirmed that what it described as Ethiopian threats constitutes a violation of the principles of international law and the United Nations Charter, which prohibit the threat or use of force against the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states.
Old Disputes Come to the Fore
It is worth noting that Eritrea gained independence from Ethiopia in 1993, making Ethiopia a landlocked country that relies on the ports of neighboring countries for its foreign trade. Years later, the two countries fought a border war from 1998 to 2000, before signing a peace agreement in 2018, following Abiy Ahmed’s rise to power. However, relations soured again after the war in the Tigray region from 2020 to 2022, in which Eritrean forces participated alongside Ethiopian forces against Tigray forces.
