U.S. President Donald Trump approved the execution by firing squad of Nidal Hasan, the former Army psychiatrist who killed 13 people in a mass shooting at Fort Hood military base in Texas in 2009.
Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell announced that Secretary of War Pete Hegseth recommended executing Hasan by an Army firing squad, and Trump agreed to the recommendation, with the Secretary of the Army to determine the time and place of the execution.
Parnell said on the platform “X”: The Secretary of War “recommended, and President Donald Trump agreed, to execute the convicted terrorist Nidal Malik Hasan by firing squad from the U.S. Army.”
He added that the Secretary of the Army will set the date and location for the execution, stating: “The day of reckoning has finally come for Hasan.”
Hasan opened fire on November 5, 2009, inside a facility at Fort Hood military base in Texas, using a semi-automatic pistol, resulting in the deaths of 13 people and injuring more than 30 others.
In 2013, a military jury convicted him on 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder, sentencing him to death.
Hasan chose to represent himself during the trial, did not call any witnesses or provide testimony, nor did he attempt to deny responsibility for the attack, while attorneys appointed by the court to assist him expressed concern that he was seeking a death sentence.
Hasan, an American of Palestinian descent, worked as a psychiatrist in the U.S. Army and carried out the attack inside a soldier readiness center at the base before their deployment to operational areas.
The attack resulted in the deaths of 12 military personnel and one civilian, while Hasan was shot by a civilian police officer responding to the attack, which left him paralyzed.
Investigations revealed that Hasan had communicated with the radical American cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, who later became one of the prominent leaders of al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, before being killed in a U.S. drone strike in Yemen.
If the execution is carried out, Hasan will be the first person executed under a sentence from the U.S. military justice system since 1961.
