The Houthi terrorist militia targeted Aden International Airport at dawn on Wednesday with two ballistic missiles and several explosive drones, according to the Yemeni Ministry of Transport, at a time when the airport was witnessing flight activity with passengers, employees, and aircraft on the ground. This prompted the relevant authorities to take urgent measures, including evacuating the airport and diverting a flight coming from Cairo to Jeddah and moving two aircraft away from the danger zone.
The targeting occurred just minutes before the scheduled landing of Yemenia flight number (603) coming from Cairo, as one of the missiles fell near the airport runway, while other passengers were preparing to depart on a flight to Jeddah.
In a statement, the Yemeni Ministry of Transport in the temporary capital, Aden, condemned in the strongest terms the targeting of the runway and passenger terminal at Aden International Airport, holding the Houthi terrorist militia responsible for the attack that targeted a civilian and vital facility.
The ministry stated that the attack occurred at a highly dangerous time, as one of the missiles fell near the airport runway just minutes before the landing of Yemenia flight number (603) from the Egyptian capital, Cairo, with civilian passengers on board, which could have led—according to the ministry—to a humanitarian disaster and the loss of dozens of lives.
Passengers and Aircraft at the Airport
The ministry clarified that the danger was not limited to the aircraft coming from Cairo, as there were employees and passengers inside the airport waiting for a flight to Jeddah at three o’clock in the morning, in addition to two aircraft on the airport ground, one belonging to Yemenia and the other to Aden Airlines.
It added that the presence of passengers, employees, flight crews, and aircraft at the airport simultaneously with the attack put them in direct danger.
Diverting the Cairo Flight to Jeddah
In light of the ongoing threat, the relevant authorities took urgent measures to protect lives, including canceling the landing of the Yemenia flight coming from Cairo and diverting its route to Jeddah, in addition to evacuating the two aircraft on the airport runway and moving them away from the danger zone, fearing they might be targeted again.
These measures came concurrently with the observation of several drones belonging to the Houthis flying in the airspace of the temporary capital, Aden, according to the ministry’s statement.
Evacuating the Airport
The relevant authorities also evacuated the airport building of employees and passengers and moved them away from danger areas amid the ongoing threat.
The Ministry of Transport confirmed that protecting human life remains above all considerations, stressing the necessity of keeping passengers, airport employees, and flight crews away from conflict and military actions.
Direct Threat to Air Navigation
The ministry considered that targeting Aden International Airport at a time when a civilian aircraft was approaching landing, with two other aircraft on the airport ground and passengers and employees inside its facilities, represents a disregard for civilian lives and exposes them to direct danger.
The ministry affirmed that the attack represents a serious escalation and a blatant violation of international laws and norms that guarantee the protection of civil aviation, airports, and civilian facilities from hostile acts, in addition to being a direct threat to the safety of air navigation and the lives of passengers and workers in the aviation sector.
