The New Zealand police revealed on Tuesday that the Flydubai co-pilot Hamam Al-Hammami, who stabbed the captain of the plane last week, was in New Zealand to complete part of his flight training for a company based in the United Kingdom.
The police explained that the man had been residing in New Zealand from November 2018 to May 2019 on a six-month student visa.
The attack occurred last Wednesday on board Flydubai flight FZ1073, which was carrying 172 passengers, including 166 Israelis, in addition to crew members, on a flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv. The co-pilot stabbed the Indian captain, who, despite his injury, managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers and crew members to subdue the attacker.
The plane made an emergency landing at Tabuk Airport.
New Zealand police assistant commissioner Michael Johnson said in a statement emailed to Reuters: “Immigration records show he arrived in New Zealand on November 30, 2018, and left on May 23, 2019.”
He added: “The police can confirm that the co-pilot was in New Zealand to complete part of his flight training for a company based in the United Kingdom, which is no longer operating in New Zealand.”
The police are currently reviewing records and conducting investigations regarding the time he spent in New Zealand.
The Attorney General in the UAE announced that the co-pilot on board Flydubai flight FZ 1073, which was heading to Israel from Dubai, attacked the captain with an emergency axe. He also described the incident as a “terrorist attack.”
Two sources reported that the co-pilot is an Omani named Hamam Al-Hammami. Israeli officials did not disclose the name of the co-pilot, but they said he is from Oman. Neither UAE authorities nor Flydubai publicly revealed the identity of the co-pilot.
An Australian counter-terrorism unit involving several agencies is investigating this man’s connections to Australia.
