Remki Baker, a researcher in the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience at Auckland University of Technology, revealed that quitting sugar may be more difficult for individuals who experience high levels of stress and anxiety.
She explained that people who had consumed larger amounts of sugar before attempting to quit, or who lacked confidence in their ability to control their consumption, also face greater difficulties in giving it up.
Baker and her colleagues tracked 203 participants over two weeks as they attempted to quit sugar, asking them five times a day to report to the research team whether they had consumed sugar, how much they felt the urge to eat sweets, as well as their psychological state.
Baker stated that individuals who reported higher levels of stress and anxiety before starting their attempt to quit sugar were more likely to experience additional symptoms.
The follow-up showed that participants who initially consumed larger amounts of sugar, felt a strong desire to consume it, or had less confidence in their ability to control their consumption, faced greater challenges in quitting.
About one-third of the participants were able to completely abstain from sugar throughout the two-week study period, while those who could not fully abstain consumed sugar intermittently, averaging only two days of sugar intake out of 14 days.
Baker emphasized the importance of not considering complete abstinence from sugar as the only measure of success in daily life, asserting that consuming sugar even once should not be viewed as a failure.
