A 5.5 magnitude earthquake struck the Aleutian region in the state of Alaska, USA, today (Tuesday), according to the United States Geological Survey.
Reuters reported, citing the agency, that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 87.3 kilometers below the Earth’s surface, while initial estimates had placed its location near the Kukanok area, before the Geological Survey updated its data and identified its location in Aleutian.
Depth Exceeding 87 Kilometers
The earthquake is classified as a medium-depth tremor, as its epicenter is located at a depth greater than 87 kilometers, which affects the extent of the tremor felt on the surface and its intensity in surrounding areas.
Aleutian is located on the southern coast of Afognak Island, north of Kodiak Island, within the Kodiak archipelago in southern Alaska.
Seismically Active Area
Alaska is considered one of the most seismically active regions in the United States, due to the movement of the Pacific tectonic plate and its subduction beneath the North American plate.
The United States Geological Survey explains that this tectonic movement is responsible for a significant portion of the seismic activity in southern Alaska, the Alaska Peninsula, and the Aleutian Islands.
No reports of human casualties or material damages due to the earthquake were available at the time of preparing this news.
