A fire broke out on (Tuesday) inside the French nuclear aircraft carrier “Charles de Gaulle” while it was docked at the naval base in Toulon, southern France, before firefighting teams were able to control and completely extinguish the flames.
The Mediterranean maritime authority announced that the fire alarm went off shortly before 11:30 AM local time, inside a technical room not exceeding 10 square meters, located near the aircraft hangar on board the carrier.
According to the statement, the crew members of “Charles de Gaulle” immediately intervened to combat the fire, before being joined by the naval firefighting teams from the Toulon base, in an operation that resulted in controlling the flames by 12:35, while it was announced that the fire was completely extinguished by 1:50 PM.
Official data confirmed that the aircraft hangar near the fire site did not contain any aircraft at the time of the outbreak, which limited the risks of the fire spreading to the planes and equipment on board the carrier.
“Charles de Gaulle” has been undergoing a phase of technical maintenance at the Toulon base since the end of August, and this phase is expected to continue until early December, meaning that the carrier was not on an operational mission at the time of the incident.
The significance of the incident stems from the nature of the ship itself, as “Charles de Gaulle” represents one of the most prominent tools of French military power. It is the first French aircraft carrier powered by nuclear energy and entered active service in 2001. The French Ministry of Defense confirms that it is currently the only carrier in the French Navy.
The importance of “Charles de Gaulle” is not limited to operating aircraft from the sea, as it forms the core of a naval air group that includes “Rafale Marine” fighters, surveillance and warning aircraft, and helicopters, alongside ships, frigates, submarines, and support units, giving the French Navy the capability to conduct long-range operations and demonstrate power in various regions.
The carrier is also linked to French nuclear capabilities; the Ministry of Defense clarifies that the “Rafale Marine” operating from it is part of the components of the French nuclear naval air force, giving the carrier group a strategic dimension that goes beyond deployment and conventional operations.
The Toulon base is the main port of the French Navy in the Mediterranean and hosts a significant portion of the French fleet, as well as receiving maintenance and preparation operations for the carrier and its naval group ships. At the same time, France is working on developing the infrastructure of the base in preparation for the future aircraft carrier “France Libre,” which is expected to enter service in the future to gradually replace “Charles de Gaulle.”
The fire comes at a time when “Charles de Gaulle” is celebrating 25 years since its entry into service, after years of participating in a number of French and international military operations, from Afghanistan to operations against ISIS and deployment missions in various regions.
