The police in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, announced the arrest of 12 individuals on suspicion of being involved in a network for stealing cats and selling them, after stating that the detainees confessed to stealing around 2,700 cats during nighttime operations in residential areas.

According to the police, the suspects moved in small groups on motorbikes during the night, targeting homes they knew had cat owners, before setting traps nearby.

Local media reported that the group members used pieces of fish as bait to attract the cats to the traps, before transporting the animals in preparation for sale, amid suspicions from authorities that the cats were being sent for slaughter and their meat used for food.

Traps and Fur Removal Machines Among the Seized Items

During the investigation, the police seized dozens of tools suspected to be used in the hunting and processing of cats, including 55 cat traps, a weighing scale, and two fur removal machines, in addition to 14 bags, 13 mobile phones, and seven motorbikes.

The police stated that they also seized 50 cats during the operation, along with a sum of 6.7 million Vietnamese dong, equivalent to about 257 US dollars.

The authorities clarified that the group members were stealing an average of 4 to 10 cats each night, according to a statement published by the Ho Chi Minh City police in their official newspaper.

13 Cats Returned to Their Owners

Among the fifty cats found by the police, 13 were returned to their owners after being identified, while the other animals were transferred to an animal care center.

This operation follows another one in June, during which an animal welfare organization announced the rescue of over 400 cats that were headed for slaughter, after dismantling another network suspected of being involved in cat theft.

Millions of Animals Slaughtered Annually

The organization “World Animal Protection” states that around 5 million dogs and 1 million cats are hunted, stolen, or trafficked and slaughtered for meat in Vietnam each year.

Consumption of dog and cat meat remains legal in the country, with some restaurants offering these meats on their menus, although sellers are required to obtain permits proving the source of the animals.

In recent years, calls for changing these practices have increased, alongside growing public opposition to the trade in pet meat.

Majority of Youth Support Banning Cat Meat Trade

A survey conducted by the organization in 2023 showed a growing public opposition to the consumption and trade of cat meat, particularly among youth and pet owners.

According to the survey results, 71% of participants supported imposing a ban on the consumption and trade of cat meat.

Animal protection organizations state that the increasing ownership of pets and the changing perception of them in Vietnamese society are driving a renewed discussion about the trade in dog and cat meat, amid calls for enhanced monitoring of animal transport and sourcing and reducing theft from homes.

The arrest of the suspects once again highlights the phenomenon of pet theft and trafficking in Vietnam, at a time when animal welfare organizations are intensifying their demands for stricter measures to protect cats and dogs from theft, slaughter, and illegal trade.
