An American intelligence memo has revealed an escalation in Iran’s efforts to target American diplomats and officials both in the Middle East and beyond, stating that assassination plots have reached “advanced stages,” at a time when Washington is taking steps to reduce the number of its diplomatic staff in several countries in the region, amid fears of an expanding regional confrontation.

According to Axios, which published the memo dated October 23 and addressed to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the intelligence information indicates that Iran is intensifying its efforts to target American officials.

An American official confirmed the authenticity of the memo published by Axios reporter Barak Ravid, noting that the United States continuously assesses information related to the security situation in the region and considers Iranian threats and Houthi attacks when making decisions about the number of its embassy staff.

The official stated: “Regarding the number of our personnel at embassies, we continuously evaluate new information related to the security situation. The threat posed by Houthi attacks and Iranian terrorist plots targeting American officials is taken into account when making our decisions regarding adjustments to the number of staff at embassies subject to mandatory departure (RO) status in the region.”

Officials reported that intelligence regarding Iranian plots is one of the reasons for reducing staff numbers at several American embassies in the Middle East, coinciding with concerns about the expansion of Iranian-backed Houthis’ attacks to other countries in the region.

Security concerns are increasing amid the possibility of the United States and Israel resuming military operations against Iran, possibly after the upcoming U.S. midterm elections scheduled for November.

National Intelligence Director Jay Clayton warned Secretary of State Marco Rubio in the one-page unclassified memo of the necessity to broaden the sharing of information related to Iranian assassination plots with American personnel who may be at risk of being targeted.

The memo indicated that the available intelligence regarding these plots should reach a larger number of personnel than those currently permitted to access it.

The memo did not specify the names of the targets or the countries outside the Middle East that may be included in the plots, nor did it disclose the nature of the potential operations, but it clarified that senior officials at the State Department have already been briefed on the essential intelligence.
