Hacking phones no longer requires clicking on a suspicious link or downloading a harmful file; a security investigation has revealed a new spying technique that exploits online advertisements to target devices and infect them with spyware without any interaction from the user, after they are shown ads that appear normal on popular websites and applications.

Researchers from the “Citizen Lab” at the University of Toronto, in collaboration with the American cybersecurity company “Confiant,” revealed a technique they named “AdFection,” which they said was used to hack the devices of journalists and employees at the “Al Jazeera” network, while also monitoring advertising campaigns that targeted individuals connected to international institutions and technology and defense companies.

According to the investigation published by the “Financial Times,” the technique is backed by the Israeli company “Discover-Tech,” which exploited the digital advertising system to turn it into a covert channel for delivering spyware to targeted devices.

Hacking without clicking on links

The new technique differs from traditional spying methods that often rely on deceiving the user into clicking on a malicious link or downloading an infected file; the hacking process can begin simply by displaying an ad on the victim’s device, without requiring any action from them.

Bill Marczak, a senior researcher at “Citizen Lab,” stated that “Discover-Tech” has exploited the digital advertising system for years, turning trusted websites and widely used applications into a means of delivering spyware without a click.

The danger of this method lies in its reliance on the infrastructure of online advertising, which processes a massive number of advertising transactions daily, allowing for the targeting of specific users through platforms that may not seem connected to any spying activity.

45 devices for journalists and employees at “Al Jazeera”

According to the research findings, the “Discover-Tech” platform was used to target journalists and employees at the “Al Jazeera” network during 2024 and 2025, with at least 45 devices infected with commercial spyware developed by another Israeli company called “Candiru.”

The researchers indicated that the data they examined may also suggest the use of the platform to deliver spyware developed by other Israeli companies.

Marczak stated that the company likely represents a small part of a broader problem, warning that integration into the electronic advertising system provides spyware companies with covert tools to access important targets.

Ads on more than 120,000 websites

Data recovered by the researchers showed that “Discover-Tech” submitted bids to purchase advertising space about 3.7 billion times between March and June 2026, winning approximately 442 million times.

The company’s ads appeared on more than 120,000 websites, including news sites affiliated with the “BBC” and “New York Times,” as well as over 70,000 mobile applications, including “Yahoo Mail,” “Duolingo,” and dating apps like “Badoo” and “Grindr,” according to the report.

The appearance of ads on these sites and applications does not mean that their owners were involved in spying; the problem lies in the exploitation of the advertising system that allows for the display of advertising content to specific users across multiple platforms.

The ads also targeted users believed to work for government institutions, law enforcement agencies, and critical infrastructure sectors in Norway, Sweden, and Denmark, as well as devices linked to the American defense contractor “Raytheon,” and semiconductor companies like “NVIDIA,” “SanDisk,” and “ARM.”

The researchers confirmed that the minimum confirmed use of ads was to identify the characteristics of these users, while confirming that their devices were infected with spyware requires urgent additional investigation.

How do ads turn into a spying tool?

Targeted ads rely on an automated auction system known as “real-time bidding,” where advertising entities compete to display an ad to a specific user within fractions of a second.

During this process, ad exchange platforms, managed by companies like “Google” and “Yandex,” send requests for proposals to potential advertisers, including information about the user, such as their approximate location, IP address, and browsing history.

This data is typically used to personalize ads, but the “Citizen Lab” report states that the “Discover-Tech” program exploited it to more accurately identify targeted users, then send hidden malicious codes within seemingly harmless ads to the selected devices, aiming to infect them with spyware.

“Google” bans the Israeli company

“Discover-Tech” was listed among the approved advertising suppliers for “Google” and the European Interactive Advertising Bureau “IAB Europe,” before both entities were informed of the investigation results.

“Google” told the “Financial Times” that it banned the company from its advertising platforms following a joint investigation with “Citizen Lab” and “Confiant,” due to systematic violations of its policies.

For its part, the “IAB Europe” announced the suspension of the company from its global supplier list until investigations are completed.

“Discover-Tech” was registered in Israel in March 2020, with records showing that Dekel Buni serves as the CEO and president of the company.

According to “Citizen Lab,” the company presents itself as a legitimate advertising firm, but it acts as an intermediary between ad suppliers and spyware companies. The company and Buni did not respond to requests for comment.

Another spyware company on the U.S. blacklist

The company “Candiru,” which developed the spyware used to infect targeted devices, was placed on the U.S. blacklist in 2021, following a joint investigation between “Citizen Lab” and “Microsoft” that accused it of developing spyware known as “DevilsTongue,” used to target over 100 politicians, journalists, and others.

This new revelation comes amid ongoing warnings about the misuse of commercial spyware, which can target journalists, political figures, and employees in sensitive institutions.

The current case highlights new risks in the digital advertising system, as advertising targeting data, originally designed to reach the right audience, could turn into a means to identify individuals and monitor their devices without their knowledge.
