You may not have heard his name before, but that doesn’t stop him from being one of the most important scientists in human history, and his revolutionary discoveries have created a seismic shift whose effects are still felt today.

He is Professor Shinya Yamanaka, a stem cell scientist from Japan, who won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2012 and was featured on the cover of Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the world.

He is the one who turned the idea of aging upside down in 2006:

He discovered that by injecting 4 proteins into a skin cell from a 70-year-old, it could revert to an embryonic stem cell as if time had not passed. This is called cellular reprogramming.

Based on this, researchers at the Salk Institute in California have succeeded in extending the lifespan of mice by 30% and restoring sight to aging monkeys.

The first human trials have begun to biologically rejuvenate skin by 30 years without losing its identity as skin.

The core idea is that aging is not wear and tear, but rather a loss of information in the cell’s software, and Yamanaka found the reset button.

Yamanaka is showing humanity how to reverse biological age and treat Alzheimer’s, heart disease, and age-related blindness.

Yamanaka may be one of the most important scientists of our time, but he does not receive the attention that Spider-Man does.

Why are this scientist’s research findings important? Because before Yamanaka, we believed that aging was an inevitable fate, like an old car: the metal rusts, the engine wears out, and you cannot make it new again unless you change the parts. This was the medical thinking for two thousand years.

Yamanaka proved that the human body is not a car, but a computer.

Aging does not mean that the parts have worn out, but that the operating system is filled with errors and viruses. The hardware is still intact.

Why is this important? Four reasons that changed medicine:

1- He eliminated the idea that age is a one-way street.

He discovered that a skin cell from a 75-year-old man contains the same genetic fingerprint it had when it was an embryo. There are just chemical labels telling the cell, “You are old.” He found a way to erase these labels with 4 proteins. The cell forgets it is old and becomes young again.

This means aging is reversible, not inevitable.

2- He opened the door to treating diseases that had no cure.

All age-related diseases: Alzheimer’s, blindness, heart failure, kidney failure, diabetes, have the same cause: tired cells that have forgotten their function. If we could partially reprogram them, they would return to work. Now in 2024, they have succeeded in restoring sight to blind mice due to aging and have improved kidney and heart functions by 30-40% in mice equivalent to an 80-year-old human.

3- He solved the organ problem.

Before Yamanaka, if you wanted a new liver, you needed a donor. After him, we can take a cell from your skin, revert it to a stem cell, and turn it into a new liver using your own DNA, without immune rejection. This actually happened in Japan in 2014 for the first time: when they transplanted a retina made from the patient’s own cells.

4- Most importantly: he separated chronological age from biological age.

You may be 50 years old on your ID, but your cells may be 70 due to smoking, or 35 due to exercise. Yamanaka gave scientists a clock to measure biological age and a button to reset it.

This is why Time magazine put him on the cover: because he was the first person to say that death due to aging is not a law of nature, but a disease that can be treated, just like pneumonia was a deadly disease 100 years ago and today we treat it with antibiotics.

He taught humanity what it did not know.

Glory be to God!
