The Chairman of the Scientific Committee for the King Khalid Eye Specialist Hospital Conference, Dr. Mustafa Maqliya, confirmed in exclusive statements to “Okaz” that eradicating the disease “trachoma” as a public health issue represents one of the most significant successes achieved by Saudi Arabia in the field of ophthalmology, after the disease was widely prevalent. He pointed out that the World Health Organization acknowledged the Kingdom’s achievement in this regard in 2022.
He explained that diabetic retinopathy and genetic diseases are among the major challenges that require enhancing early detection and keeping pace with the rapid developments in modern treatments.
The Importance of Early Detection
Regarding treatment opportunities, Maqliya emphasized the importance of early detection of diabetic retinopathy, explaining that the disease reaching advanced stages may limit the chances of improving vision to the desired level.
He noted that genetic retinal disorders pose another challenge, indicating that they are more common in the Kingdom compared to other countries, while new treatments are gradually receiving approval from the Food and Drug Authority, necessitating the monitoring of their developments and discussing them at scientific conferences.
Applications of Artificial Intelligence
For his part, ophthalmologist Dr. Ahmed Al-Yahya at the King Khalid Eye Specialist Hospital revealed to “Okaz” that the percentage of adults with diabetes in the Kingdom is about 18%.
He pointed out that the applications of artificial intelligence are not limited to examinations but extend to automating appointments, recording patient files, and translation, in addition to reducing the time allocated for data entry and writing notes and reports, allowing doctors more time for direct communication with patients.
